Transboundary waters
There are 19 transboundary watercourses between Finland and the Russian Federation .
The main river basins along the common border are Vuoksi, Hiitola, Oulanka, Paatsjoki and Tuuloma. Many river basins are affected by activities such as discharges of treated waste waters, water regulation, water utilization and fisheries.
When one Contracting Party wish to take measures or plan to take measures causing or likely to cause transboundary impact it shall notify and exchange information with the other Contracting Party which may make such observations it considers necessary. The Parties take all appropriate measures to prevent, control and reduce pollution of waters causing or likely to cause transboundary impact.
