There are 19 transboundary watercourses between Finland and the Russian Federation .
The main river basins along the common border are Vuoksi, Hiitola, Oulanka, Paatsjoki and Tuloma. Many river basins are affected by activities such as discharges of treated waste waters, water regulation, water utilization and fisheries. Many types of measures have a transboundary impact and carrying out the measures is not possible without the permission of both parties. The agreement sets the water allocation rules between countries and between different uses in both countries.
